What is Copywriting and Why Do I Need It?

To put it simply, if you have anything that requires composed words on a document or website - anything that a current or potential customer, group, or employer will see and read - the words on those things are called “copy.”

When I started this web home last year, I knew a few things. I wanted to have a broader platform to share some of my personal writing with the world. I wanted to write on topics that I felt passionate about and to hear from other women about their own experiences and thoughts. I wanted this space to feel honest and encouraging. And I wanted to extend a hand out to others who may have difficulty finding the right words to say, particularly for their businesses.

In order to help bring in an income for my family, I decided to offer small-scale copywriting services within this umbrella of writing. Having owned a small creative business, I understood how much having some kind of writing skill is necessary for all of the communication one does in a business!

From emails to pricing guides, to social media and websites, there is no shortage of needing the right words in the right places in order to have a strong, thriving business.

But you don’t have to have a business to need some writing help!

Think about making a resume - what do you even write under each job? Or how about writing a personal bio for something? Have you ever looked at a blinking cursor on a screen more than in those moments?

It’s hard for everyone! Sometimes just having an extra set of eyes and someone else’s input can make you go from feeling helpless to feeling empowered and prepared.

I honestly wasn’t sure what to expect when I launched this website and business in July of last year. I felt vulnerable starting something so new and different and putting it out in the world! And I had no idea what to expect in terms of how the monetization part would go.

While that’s still (and probably always will be) a work in progress, I was so happy to start hearing from people right away who wanted writing help!

Since launching SRW, I’ve helped write an Airbnb listing for a friend who is opening a beautiful vacation rental. I helped a musician write their official bio for press releases. I have walked alongside a friend starting a new business, putting all the words together for her whole website! And I’ve helped a photographer update their investment guide, including their official bios, processes, and offerings.

And can I tell you something? I have loved it.

I love understanding someone’s own voice and goals, and reflecting that in the words. I love hearing feedback and revising until they feel proud of the message they are sending into the world. In that way, it feels like spiritual work!
